Used in traditional Chinese medicines for centuries, ginseng is a powerful ingredient with a wide variety of uses. In fact, researchers from The Mayo Clinic and National Center for Biotechnology Information have found that is ginseng is associated with improved energy levels, metabolism rates, and even improved cognitive function. However, recent studies have also found that this humble root vegetable can now have profound effects on your hair.
Preventing hair loss
We all want beautifully thick and glossy hair, but did you know that the average person loses 50 to 100 hairs every day? This can increase with ageing, due to hormonal changes which can result in thinning hair. Luckily, studies have shown that ginseng might actually be able to prevent hair loss, thinning, and breakage. Researchers in Korea have shown, in a report published by the US National Library of Medicine in 2012 that ginseng can support hair density and thickness amongst a trial group who were experiencing hair loss.
Promoting hair growth
In addition to preventing hair loss, the inclusion of ginseng in your hair products can also have remarkable effects on stimulating the growth of new hair – and who doesn’t love a gorgeous mane of thick, lush hair?
A study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science in 2015 found that ginseng encouraged hair growth by stimulating the scalp. It might sound like the stuff of science fiction, but tests found that when hair follicles were exposed to ginseng, they began to grow. And, although the studies are still being conducted, researchers believe that ginseng stimulates the scalp, thereby activating your hair follicles and encouraging them to grow long and strong.
Say goodbye to dandruff
There’s nothing more disheartening than unsightly white flakes of dandruff resting on your shoulders, but once again, ginseng comes to the rescue, thanks to a little thing called Saponin. Saponin is an antibacterial compound which can be found in ginseng and it works wonders on your scalp. From a purely physical standpoint, saponins foam up when in contact with your scalp helping to extract the existing dandruff. But because saponin is also antibacterial, it also prevents pore infection and suppresses itchiness and sebum, ensuring your follicles stay flake-free
