How do I treat colour-resistant or stubborn grey hair?2018-08-21T15:32:57+00:00

If your hair has been resistant to hair colouring in the past, we recommend applying the colour mixture first to the grey, resistant hairs at your front hairline and at the natural part in your hair. Grey hair is coarser, and it may need more time to absorb the colour to be effective. Follow the instructions for either root touch-up or full length application. When you begin applying colour, make sure you saturate the roots and hairline with colour, using the tint brush to push the colour right into the roots to help colour absorption, then colour the remaining hair and then apply more colour to the roots. Leave colour on for an additional 10 minutes for stubborn grey hair coverage.

What happens if I leave my hair colour for too long or wash it out too early?2018-08-21T15:33:13+00:00

If you leave the colour on for too long, this may result in a hair colour that is darker than anticipated. If you rinse out the colour before the instructed time, you may not achieve your desired hair colour and greys may not be completely covered.

When do I start timing the colour processing?2018-08-21T15:33:26+00:00

You should begin timing once you have completed the full application as described in the instructions

How do I determine my current hair colour for the Colour Consultation process?2018-08-21T15:33:41+00:00

Look at the images that we have provided in the Colour Consultation and select the level that most closely resembles your colour.

How much of a colour change can I make to my hair?2018-08-21T15:33:55+00:00

Your current hair colour will influence your colour result. Aim to lighten or darken your hair no more than 2 colour levels away from your current colour. If you are looking to significantly change your hair colour by more than 2 levels, we recommend you seek professional assistance.

What is the the Colour Match option?2018-08-21T15:34:26+00:00

If you already colour your hair at home and are happy with the colour, our Colour Match tool can help you find the shade that is the best match with your current at-home hair colour brand and shade. Simply select the brand and colour name/number and we will show you our closest matching colour.

I have recently had a keratin treatment in my hair. When can I colour it?2018-08-21T15:39:57+00:00

You need to wait 2 weeks after having a keratin treatment before colouring your hair, because the keratin forms a thin layer on your hair which affects the absorption of the colour in the hair, which can impact on your colour result. If you want to colour your hair and have a keratin treatment, it is better to colour your hair first and then have the keratin treatment.

I have recently straightened my hair. When can I colour it?2018-08-21T15:40:20+00:00

I have highlights. Can I use The Shade to cover them up?2018-08-21T15:40:26+00:00

The Shade permanent colour is formulated to give an all over colour result. If you want to cover your highlights, choose a darker shade than your current highlighted hair.

Can I use The Shade hair colour if I have henna in my hair?2018-08-21T15:40:40+00:00

Yes, you can use our hair colour over henna, but only if you are colouring your hair a darker shade. It is difficult to remove or lighten henna treated hair, but it can be covered by colouring your hair a darker shade. You may find that your colour fades faster if you are colouring henna treated hair. That’s because henna forms a barrier over your hair which prevents permanent hair colour from being completely and properly absorbed by the hair.

I have long hair, how many tubes of colour do I need?2018-08-21T15:40:52+00:00

You will be offered an option to buy additional colour and developer for $10 with your colour order at the checkout. The best subscription options for those with extra long or thick hair are; The Shade Extra Colour subscription, which for an additional $10 provides another tube of colour and developer.

To perform a Strand test, please following the instructions for preparing and mixing the colour and apply it to a strand of hair and allow it to process for 35 minutes (or 45 if you have stubborn greys). Rinse and shampoo the hair to get an accurate look at the colour result

How do I perform an allergy test?2018-08-21T15:41:57+00:00

It only takes about a minute to perform the skin allergy test. The allergy test should be done 48 hours before you colour your hair because it can take 48 hours for a reaction to develop. Simply get a little bit of the colour cream and apply a thin layer about 1cm x 1cm on the inside of your elbow. Leave the product uncovered on the skin for 45 minutes and then wash the colour off carefully with lukewarm water. If any reaction occurs during the processing time or during the following 48 hours, you should rinse immediately and not use this product. Always consult your doctor if you have questions or concerns. If you’ve had a sensitivity to hair colour in the past, you may be more likely to have a reaction. The test represents an important precaution. However, be aware that even if an allergy alert test has been carried out you may still experience an allergic reaction when you colour your hair. The allergy test is not a guarantee of avoiding future allergic reactions. Please consult a doctor if you have any concerns.

When should I perform an allergy patch test?2018-08-21T15:42:06+00:00

You can develop ingredient sensitivities at any point in your life, even if you’ve previously coloured your hair without any reactions. It is very important to do a patch test before colouring your hair to make sure that you are not sensitive (allergic) to any of the ingredients in your hair colour. Please see our instructions for details on how to perform the allergy test. The test represents an important precaution. However, be aware that even if an allergy alert test has been carried out you may still experience an allergic reaction when you colour your hair. The allergy test is not a guarantee of avoiding future allergic reactions. Please consult a doctor if you have any concerns.
